Psalm 19 - The words of The Sky

sunset2 sanibel causway 2002

Psalm 19

The Witness of Creation and Scripture
To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.

1 The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.
2 Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge.
3 There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard.
4 Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world.
In them he has set a tent for the sun,
5 which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber, and, like a strong man,
runs its course with joy.
6 Its rising is from the end of the heavens, and its circuit to the end of them,
and there is nothing hidden from its heat.
7 The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul;
the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple;
8 the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart;
the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes;
9 the fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the rules of the Lord are true,
and righteous altogether.
10 More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold;
sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb.
11 Moreover, by them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward.
12 Who can discern his errors? Declare me innocent from hidden faults.
13 Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me!
Then I shall be blameless, and innocent of great transgression.
14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight,
O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.

We will continue with David's meditation on God's creation.  Everyone knows about God because nature proclaims God's existence and power, this is natural revelation.

Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard. Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world.  Psalm 19:2-3 The skies proclaim the works of God day and night. A look at the sky during the night or the day should be enough to convince a person that there is a God. The glory and majesty of God is displayed in His works. It does sound a bit confusing with pouring out speech, then there is no speech.  this is poetry.  There is no contradiction here. There is constant communication, day and night, by the heavens, but it is not with literal words.  The silence of the skies fills the earth with volumes of unspoken truth. The message of the created world extends to everywhere.

In them he has set a tent for the sun, which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber, and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy.  Psalm 19: 4-5 God made a tent for the sun.   From our vantage point on the earth there is no greater object in the sky than the sun. It provides warmth and light.  Many of the pagan religions considered the sun as a god. These pagan religions worshiped the stars, moon and sun as their gods. The nation of Israel was not to worship the sun. This psalm specifically tells us that the sun is only a creation of God.  It is not a god and should not be worshiped.  The sun as a creation of god actually "speaks" to the people of the glory of the Creator God. The sun, like a bridegroom, is celebrating it creator. The sun is a like a strong man.  It runs a race across the sky each day. There is not a place in the world that the sun does not touch every day.  It rises bright and joyfully every morning and crosses the sky each day.  The purpose of the sun is to provide sustenance to all living things on earth. It provides heat and light.  It joyfully glorifies its creator God.

God’s wisdom does not need to be spoken. Through creation, it is seen, felt, and experienced.  It is quite ridiculous to say that the universe happened by chance.  The design of nature points to a personally involved Creator. My first college study was in Science. I know that science has a lot of fantastic thing to say about the earth and creation.  There is no absolute evidence for any of the many theories of the origin of the universe.  The true study of science began and flourished by Christians. Biblical belief and science are not mortal enemies. Modern science first flourished under a Christian worldview and floundered non Christian nations.

Modern science is based on the assumption that the universe is orderly. An orderly universe makes perfect sense only if was made by an orderly creator. The very fact that we can look at nature and see a plan is because of the plan of God. The very nature of His creation allows us to study and observe natural laws. These are the laws created by God. We can calculate the size of the earth and the galaxy because God's law establishes specific things to happen in specific ways.  We can predict the outcome of a controlled experiment because it follows the God made natural laws, and it will always end with the same result.  God created the heavens and the earth.  He alone is the creator of the universe. As you look at the wondrous natural sky, and God's handiworks in heaven and on earth it will take you breath away.  What an awesome God we serve. We must thank Him for the beauty of the heavens and the earth.

Nature points to the existence of God.  The law of God points out our sins, and sinful nature. The Gospel tells us about God's plan of salvation. It is the wonderful duty of Christians to explain to others how they can have a relationship with God. Even in today's world most people believe in a Creator.  The evidence of nature around them shout of the existence of God.Just knowing that there is a God is not going to save you. You must know God.  You must know Jesus as your Savior. People need to know about God's  love, mercy, and grace.  We need to tell them the good news of redemption through Jesus Christ. We need to inform them so that the Holy Spirit can work in them and they will become a new creation.

The next blog, should I get around to it, will discus the second part of this Psalm 19.  We have seen the natural revelation of God, next we will look at His revelation in His Law.
